Canelo Alvarez Seeks to Solidify Legacy in Undisputed Showdown Against Jermell Charlo
(Las Vegas) – Boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez is set to defend his WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO super middleweight world titles against junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo this Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Despite an impressive 59-2-2 record and three consecutive title defenses, the 33-year-old Mexican icon feels he has something to prove. “I have always had people who don’t believe in my skills, no matter what I do,” Alvarez said in a Zoom interview. “But I don’t care. I go to work and do my job.”
Alvarez acknowledges that his last three fights, including a loss to Dmitry Bivol and a close win over Gennady Golovkin, have been less than stellar. “My last two fights, I was still in rehab for my hand. I wasn’t able to train 100 percent, I wasn’t able to have that same confidence in the ring. But right now I feel great and you will see the difference,” he promised.
Charlo Presents a Formidable Challenge
Charlo, the undisputed 154-pound champion, presents a formidable challenge as he seeks to become the fourth fighter to win titles after jumping two weight classes, joining the likes of Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, and Roy Jones Jr. – a feat Alvarez himself has accomplished.
“It’s a big fight,” Alvarez said. “Undisputed vs. undisputed. Charlo is a great fighter. It’s going to be a good one.” Canelo’s trainer, Eddy Reynoso, echoed the sentiment, stating, “We’ve left behind the injuries and setbacks and we’re ready to show that Canelo is prepared to put on a great fight for the fans.”
Alvarez Focused on Cementing Legacy
With a decisive victory on Saturday, Alvarez could reclaim his position as the face of boxing, a title currently held by Terence Crawford. The Mexican superstar, who earned $110 million between May 2022 and May 2023 according to Forbes, remains focused on cementing his legacy.
“I have proved a lot in boxing. If people don’t believe by now, they are never going to believe. I will just keep doing my job, and when my career is over, people will see who I am,” he said.
As for the future, Alvarez has not committed to a fight against the undefeated David Benavidez, who has been declared the mandatory challenger. However, he did not rule out a potential super fight against welterweight champion Terence Crawford, stating, “You never know in boxing. If it makes sense, let’s do it.”
Regardless of what lies ahead, Canelo Alvarez is determined to put on a show on Saturday night and solidify his place as one of the all-time greats in the sport of boxing.
