Vasiliy Lomachenko’s Quest for Undisputed Glory Continues in Australia
In a highly anticipated matchup, Vasiliy Lomachenko, the two-time Olympic champion, will face off against George Kambosos Jr. this Sunday in a bid to capture the IBF lightweight title. Lomachenko’s dream of becoming the undisputed champion could be one step closer to reality if he emerges victorious in this clash.
Lomachenko narrowly missed out on achieving his goal in his previous outing, where many believed his hand should have been raised against Devin Haney. Now, he has another opportunity to pick up one of the four coveted belts in the lightweight division.
According to Lomachenko’s promoter, Bob Arum, a win over Kambosos would not only secure a world title for the Ukrainian boxer but also set up a tantalizing matchup against WBC titleholder Shakur Stevenson. Arum emphasized the significance of this potential unification bout, stating:
“Every serious boxing fan will be watching that in awe, between two great technicians fighting for a unified title.”
However, Arum acknowledges that Kambosos will be no easy opponent, having previously upset the odds to dethrone the unified champion, Teofimo Lopez – the same man who had previously defeated Lomachenko. Additionally, Arum believes that Lomachenko’s age, at 36, could be a factor, particularly in the lighter-weight divisions where age tends to have a more significant impact.
If Lomachenko emerges victorious this weekend and claims the IBF title, his next step would be to face the WBC titleholder, Stevenson. After that, he would set his sights on the winner of the Emanuel Navarrete-Denys Berinchyk clash for the WBO title on May 18. This could potentially pave the way for a blockbuster matchup against WBA belt holder Gervonta Davis for the undisputed lightweight championship next year.
