Boxing Fans Witness Historic Undisputed Heavyweight Title Fight
Boxing enthusiasts were treated to a groundbreaking heavyweight showdown, as all four major world title belts were on the line. The magnitude of this event made it the most significant heavyweight fight in a generation.
The fight ended in dramatic fashion, with Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk rallying in the second half to capture a split-decision victory, winning by a single point on the scorecards. In celebration, Usyk proudly lifted the coveted “UNDISPUTED” belt, solidifying his status as the undisputed heavyweight champion.
“A great night of boxing and a great fight worthy of the hype,” declared International Boxing Federation (IBF) President Daryl Peoples.
However, the boxing world now awaits the potential rematch, as former champion Tyson Fury intends to exercise his contractual rematch clause. This is likely to lead to an October 12 rematch in Saudi Arabia.
The IBF’s mandatory title contender, Croatia’s Filip Hrgovic (17-0, 14 KOs), has waited patiently for his shot at the title, according to a spokesman for Team Hrgovic. With Hrgovic set to face England’s Daniel Dubois (20-2, 19 KOs) on June 1 in Saudi Arabia, the spokesman stated, “It’s time” for Hrgovic to challenge for the IBF title.
Peoples explained that the IBF rules make it clear that Hrgovic is entitled to his title fight, as a rematch clause cannot interfere with a mandatory challenger. However, Peoples also revealed that “any reigning champion is going to be able to ask for an exception” to the IBF rules, potentially allowing Usyk to retain the undisputed status.
The boxing community eagerly awaits the decisions and negotiations that will shape the future of the heavyweight division. As the sport continues to captivate fans, the anticipation for the potential rematch and the resolution of the IBF title situation remains high.
