Gvozdyk Looks to Continue Ukraine’s Boxing Surge Against Benavidez
Former Olympian and WBC light-heavyweight champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk is aiming to continue Ukraine’s recent success in high-profile fights when he takes on David Benavidez this Saturday at the MGM Grand.
In the wake of impressive victories by fellow Ukrainian boxers Serhii Bohachuk, Vasiliy Lomachenko, Oleksandr Usyk, and Denys Berinchyk, Gvozdyk is eager to extend his nation’s impressive run. The 20-1 (16 KOs) fighter is welcoming the super middleweight Benavidez up to the 175-pound division and is relishing the opportunity to showcase his skills.
“It makes me remember those cool vibes from the Olympic Games when we were all fighting together and were winning together,” said “The Nail.” “Hopefully I’ll continue the streak.”
Gvozdyk is also driven by the desire to lift the spirits of his compatriots amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
“Of course, to cheer them up, especially in the hard times for Ukraine,” he explained.
The 37-year-old is well aware of the threat posed by the undefeated Benavidez, who has dominated at super middleweight and is now seeking to make a mark in the light-heavyweight division. However, Gvozdyk believes the move up in weight could play to Benavidez’s advantage.
“Well, this is what I think, because he’s a big guy – he also said that at 175 he feels more comfortable but we will see,” Gvozdyk said. “Oh I rate him very high because he’s one of the best in boxing. He’s a ‘Monster’ and he’s becoming one of the most avoided fighters not for no reason.”
The fight on Saturday night promises to be a thrilling encounter between two top-level boxers, with Gvozdyk determined to extend Ukraine’s recent success in the sport.
