Boxing’s Undisputed Heavyweight Champion: Oleksandr Usyk’s Triumph Resonates in Ukraine
Oleksandr Usyk’s promoter Alex Krassyuk has described the profound sense of escapism and inspiration his historic victory over Tyson Fury has brought to the people of Ukraine, who remain under siege amidst the ongoing Russian invasion.
Usyk’s Remarkable Journey
The 37-year-old Usyk’s triumph in the undisputed heavyweight title fight, which took place just a week after fellow Ukrainian Vasiliy Lomachenko’s stoppage win over George Kambosos Jr., represents a significant achievement in the sport. Usyk has now become the first undisputed heavyweight champion since the legendary Lennox Lewis in 1999.
In a thrilling encounter at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Usyk threatened to stop the previously undefeated Fury in the ninth round, and many felt he deserved more than the split decision he was ultimately awarded.
Emotional Significance for Ukrainians
Krassyuk, Usyk’s compatriot, acknowledged the immense emotional significance of this victory for Ukrainians amid the ongoing conflict. “This is a very sensitive issue for all Ukrainians,” he said. “Usyk is the icon for new generations; for current generations. He’s the icon – the example – for children. Many people think he’s one of the most well recognized personalities in Ukraine, and probably one of the most respected.”
Usyk’s remarkable journey, which has seen him capture the Olympic gold, the undisputed cruiserweight title, and now the heavyweight crown, has captivated his fellow Ukrainians. Krassyuk praised the boxer’s determination, stating, “For a normal athlete, it’s time to stop, but not for Usyk, so he starts his journey at heavyweight.”
“I want to thank the Ukrainian soldiers who are now fighting for the freedom of our country. They’re real heroes. Usyk is fighting because of them – because they give him this possibility.”
Despite Fury’s reputation for resilience, Usyk’s dominance in the fight was evident, with Krassyuk believing the referee should have stopped the contest in the ninth round when the Briton appeared to be on the verge of a knockout. “The ref saved Tyson from a knockout, and he stole the ninth-round knockout which should have happened,” he said.
Anticipating the Rematch
As the much-anticipated rematch between Usyk and Fury looms in October, Krassyuk expressed his confidence in his fighter’s ability to once again emerge victorious, solidifying his status as the undisputed heavyweight champion and a true icon for the people of Ukraine.
