Boxing Heavyweights Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk Sign Historic Unification Fight
Boxing fans worldwide are in for a treat as world heavyweight champions Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk have finally signed a deal to compete for the undisputed title. The highly anticipated showdown is set to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with the specific fight date yet to be confirmed but expected to be late 2023 or early 2024.
WBC titleholder Fury and Usyk, the current WBO, WBA, and IBF champion, have been in negotiations for this unification bout for some time, and fight enthusiasts are thrilled that the two titans have now come to an agreement.
“This is the biggest fight that could possibly be made in our sport. The heavyweights always spark the imagination of the fans, and I have no doubt this will be the biggest boxing event of the century.” – Frank Warren of Queensberry Promotions
Top Rank’s Bob Arum echoed the sentiment, saying, “Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk are the two greatest heavyweights of their generation, and I can’t wait to see what happens when they step into the ring in Riyadh. They are special talents worthy of competing for the greatest prize in sports.”
Alex Krassyk of K2 shared his excitement, declaring, “I can’t believe that it’s happening but it is. Difficult to express my admiration for being part of the biggest heavyweight fight of the century.”
Undefeated Titans
Undefeated Usyk, a former undisputed champion at cruiserweight, became the WBO, WBA, and IBF heavyweight champion after dethroning Anthony Joshua in 2021 and winning the rematch a year later. He most recently defeated Daniel Dubois in August.
Fury, known for his impressive victories over Deontay Wilder and domestic rivals Dillian Whyte and Derek Chisora in 2022, will next face former MMA fighter Francis Ngannou in Riyadh next month before taking on Usyk.
With both fighters boasting impressive undefeated records – Usyk at 21-0 and Fury at 33-0-1 – the winner of this highly anticipated bout will become the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999.
