Boxing Recap: Kyrone Davis Hands Elijah Garcia First Career Loss in Thriller
Las Vegas, Nevada – In a thrilling 10-round affair at the MGM Grand on Saturday, Kyrone Davis scored the biggest win of his career, handing the previously undefeated Elijah Garcia his first professional loss.
Davis was declared the worthy winner, with two judges scoring the fight 97-93 in his favor, while the third judge had it 98-92 for Garcia. Despite a determined late surge from the Phoenix prospect, Davis won more rounds overall and fended off Garcia’s efforts to mount a comeback.
“We knew a couple of things, I had a strategy. We knew he was going to try that left to the body, so we would put his right hand where that left hand was going to be,” an emotional Davis said in the post-fight interview.
The highly anticipated matchup was initially scheduled for May 30th, but had to be rescheduled after Garcia fell ill prior to the original bout. Further drama unfolded on the eve of the fight when Garcia came in 3.2 pounds over the middleweight limit at the weigh-in, but he was able to meet the rehydration clause set by Davis’ team and the fight went forward.
The Bout
The bout lived up to the hype, with Davis’ consistent right hand proving to be the most effective scoring punch throughout the contest. However, the determined Garcia refused to go away, plowing forward and working the body, while also landing the occasional counter. The action was close and hard-fought, with Davis using his footwork to create angles, only to stand and trade with the resilient Garcia at times.
In the end, Davis’ early work and superior control of the fight proved to be the difference, as he secured the victory and handed the previously unbeaten Garcia his first professional loss. Elijah Garcia now stands at 16-1 (13 KOs), while Kyrone Davis improves to 19-3-1 (6 KOs).
Co-Main Event
In the co-main event, former WBC featherweight champion Mark Magsayo (26-2, 17 KOs) earned a wide 10-round decision victory over Eduardo Ramirez (28-4-3, 13 KOs) in a junior lightweight clash. Magsayo dominated the action, scoring a third-round knockdown and controlling the tempo throughout to secure the 97-92, 97-92, and 99-90 scorecards.
