Renowned Boxing Trainer Hails Terence Crawford as One of the “Greatest Ever”
Renowned boxing trainer Brian McIntyre didn’t mince words when discussing Terence Crawford’s potential legacy. If Crawford captures an undisputed championship in a third weight division, he would join the ranks of legendary fighters like Sugar Ray Robinson and Floyd Mayweather Jr. as one of the “greatest ever,” McIntyre proclaimed.
Speaking to reporters following a press conference in New York, McIntyre asserted, “You have to rank him in the top five of all great fighters.” He cited Crawford alongside boxing icons such as Robinson and Mayweather, emphasizing the significance of the accomplishment should Crawford succeed in his upcoming bout.
Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) is set to face Israil Madrimov on August 3rd for the WBA and WBO interim junior middleweight titles at the BMO Stadium in Los Angeles. This fight marks Crawford’s debut in the 154-pound weight class, as he aims to become an undisputed champion in a third division, having previously achieved the feat at 140 pounds.
“You have to rank him in the top five of all great fighters.”
McIntyre acknowledged the challenge posed by Madrimov (10-0-1, 7 KOs), describing him as the “GGG of 154,” referring to the fearsome punching power of Gennady Golovkin. However, the trainer expressed confidence in Crawford’s abilities, stating that the unified welterweight champion is determined to cement his legacy as one of the greatest fighters to ever lace up the gloves.
Crawford’s last fight was a dominant ninth-round stoppage of Errol Spence Jr. in their undisputed welterweight title clash in July. McIntyre believes a rematch between the two at 154 pounds is unlikely, given the one-sided nature of their previous encounter.
As for Crawford’s own perspective, the 36-year-old told DAZN’s Chris Mannix that becoming an undisputed champion in a third weight class is not his “priority,” but it is “up there” in terms of his goals. He acknowledged the opportunity to potentially capture three titles on August 3rd, which could pave the way for him to achieve undisputed status in the 154-pound division within a few fights.
