The World Boxing Organization has Announced Interim Title Fight Between Terence Crawford and Israil Madrimov
Heightened Possibility of Dual 154-Pound Titles
Madrimov, a boxer from Uzbekistan, currently holds the WBA junior middleweight championship after his fifth-round TKO victory over Magomed Kurbanov in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on March 8. The August 3 event, set to take place at the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, will be promoted by Saudi Arabia’s Turki Alalshikh, who is making his U.S. debut.
Crawford, the unbeaten three-division champion and widely regarded as the top pound-for-pound fighter, will headline the event. Alalshikh is also poised to host two significant cards in Saudi Arabia in the coming months, featuring the undisputed heavyweight title fight between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk, as well as the undisputed light heavyweight title clash between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol.
“The addition of the WBO interim strap to the August 3 main event is a result of the current WBO junior middleweight champion, Sebastian Fundora, suffering a broken nose in his recent split decision triumph over Tim Tszyu in Las Vegas. Fundora has been medically suspended until late September, and his promoter has indicated that he may not fight again until December.”
As a WBO ‘super’ champion, Crawford has the right to invoke a title shot in nearby weight classes, which he had done even before the Tszyu-Fundora fight. With a formal announcement scheduled for Wednesday in New York, Crawford may ultimately end up claiming the full WBO strap by defeating Madrimov.
