Canada’s Tammara Thibeault Wins Middleweight Title at Women’s World Boxing Championships
In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Canada’s Tammara Thibeault emerged victorious at the women’s world boxing championships in Istanbul on Friday. The 25-year-old from Regina clinched the middleweight title (70-75 kilograms) with a split-decision win (4-1) over Atheyna Bylon of Panama.
Thibeault, who had previously won bronze at the 2019 world championships, expressed pure elation at achieving her lifelong dream.
“This has been my dream forever and I did it,” she exclaimed. “It still feels surreal but I am so happy.”
The Regina-born boxer had secured her place in the gold-medal bout earlier in the week, defeating Mozambique’s Rady Adosinda Gramane in a unanimous decision. For her championship triumph, Thibeault pocketed a substantial US$100,000 prize.
Silver for Canada’s Charlie Cavanagh
In another standout performance, 21-year-old Charlie Cavanagh from Saint John, N.B. captured silver in the welterweight category (63-66 kilograms). Cavanagh lost to Olympic champion Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey, with the referee stopping the bout in the final minute.
“This is my first time being stopped,” Cavanagh acknowledged, describing it as “a very tough pill to swallow.” Nevertheless, the young athlete earned a respectable $50,000 for his runner-up finish.
The Canadian Press first reported this story on May 20, 2022, showcasing the impressive achievements of Thibeault and Cavanagh on the global boxing stage.
