Sunny Edwards Seeking Redemption in Upcoming Boxing Bout
Sunny Edwards is eager to bounce back from his first career defeat as he prepares for his return to the ring this Saturday at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona. The former world champion believes the experience has only sharpened his focus and hunger to reclaim his place at the top of the boxing world.
Edwards (20-1, 4 KOs) suffered his maiden loss last December against Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez in a flyweight unification clash in Glendale, Arizona. Now, he is set to face fellow former titleholder Adrian Curiel (24-5-1, 5 KOs) in the chief support bout, with the main event featuring a matchup between Juan Francisco Estrada and Rodriguez.
Despite Curiel’s recent success, including a second-round knockout victory over Sivenathi Nontshinga to claim a junior flyweight title in Monte Carlo last November, Edwards remains confident in his abilities. “I genuinely think I could beat Curiel and Nontshinga on the same night,” he said. “Is he dangerous? Of course. Everyone is. Was I massively impressed? I feel like I’ve been in the ring with far better and I’ve beaten far better. So it’s a great opportunity for me to put on an impressive performance.”
The British boxer believes that his defeat against Rodriguez has only served to sharpen his focus and make him hungrier than ever. “I might have more of a chip on my shoulder,” Edwards said. “I think I’ve lost a bit of complacency that I was getting. The main difference of my mindset [going] into the fight, since I was a world champion, I lost the fear and gained an ego. Going away for a training camp, taking two or three sparring partners, taking my coach and another coach, a nutritionist – yes – there’s X, Y, Z of cost for that, but it will always be worth it.”
In addition to the Edwards-Curiel bout, the event will feature a junior featherweight title defense by Yamileth Mercado against Ramla Ali, as well as an undercard featuring several up-and-coming fighters.
