Subriel Matias Seeks Dominant Performance in Puerto Rico Homecoming
Subriel Matias, the reigning IBF junior welterweight champion, will defend his title tonight against unbeaten Australian challenger Liam Paro in Matias’ homecoming fight in Puerto Rico. The event is part of the Matchroom boxing card at the Coliseo Juan Aubin Cruz Abreu in Manati.
The 32-year-old Matias, who has stopped all 20 of his professional opponents, is eager to deliver a statement performance in front of his passionate Puerto Rican fans. Matias’ only career loss came against Petros Ananyan in 2020, but he has since avenged that defeat.
“He’s got to fight more world-class guys,” Algieri argued. “I think this Liam Paro fight is going to be really eye-opening, because I think Liam is world-class.”
The undefeated Paro (24-0, 15 KOs) impressed in his recent victories over Brock Jarvis and Montana Love, but veteran analyst Paulie Malignaggi believes the Australian challenger will fall short against the heavy-handed Matias.
“I really think Matias runs through him,” Malignaggi predicted.
Matias, who enjoys strong support from the passionate Puerto Rican boxing fans, is expected to put on a dominant performance and potentially force Paro to quit in their title clash tonight.
