Junior Middleweight Serhii Bohachuk Claims WBC Interim Title
Junior middleweight Serhii Bohachuk earned the biggest win of his career, claiming the WBC junior middleweight interim title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Brian Mendoza at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 30.
The judges scored the fight 118-110, 117-111, and 117-111 in favor of Bohachuk (24-1, 23 KOs), who had just 10 days to prepare for his new opponent after his original foe, Sebastian Fundora, stepped in to face Tim Tszyu in the main event.
“[Switching from Fundora to Mendoza] might have been harder because Fundora is different, Fundora is special. You need to be ready for Fundora,” Bohachuk stated.
Despite being moved off the pay-per-view, the Ukrainian boxer remained in good spirits, noting, “Mendoza is a good boxer, but I have sparring [with people similar to] Mendoza every time. He is shorter, he is right-handed – it is not a big deal.”
Bohachuk’s victory marked an impressive performance, and the boxer expressed openness to a potential future clash with Fundora, saying, “I think a fight with Fundora is possible, but not now, a little bit later.”
