Riverside Boxer Prepares for Showdown with Mexican Legend
Riverside, California, May 31 – Robert Garcia oversaw Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez’s sparring session yesterday, as the undefeated boxer prepares for his highly anticipated WBC super flyweight clash with Juan Francisco Estrada on June 29 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix.
The 19-0 (12 KOs) Texan Rodriguez is set to face the seasoned 44-3 (28 KOs) Estrada, a Mexican boxing legend widely regarded as one of the most talented fighters in the sport today. “Estrada’s a very experienced fighter, pound-for-pound, he’s a Mexican legend. He might be the most talented Mexican in the world right now,” said Garcia, Rodriguez’s coach.
“We have to focus on Estrada right now. We have to focus on what’s next,” the trainer stated, acknowledging the weight discrepancy between Rodriguez and the formidable Inoue.
While the upcoming Estrada-Rodriguez bout is generating significant buzz in the boxing community, the 27-year-old fighter has also been linked to a potential September superfight against Japan’s unified super bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue at Wembley Stadium in London. However, Garcia insists the team’s sole focus is on the Estrada clash.
“A Great Challenge”
“It’s a great challenge,” Garcia said of the Estrada fight. “But that’s what Bam likes. He likes those challenges. He doesn’t want to hold back, fighting guys that nobody knows, that don’t mean anything for him. He wants to fight the best.” The 34-year-old Estrada, a former unified champion, is coming off a majority decision victory over the legendary Roman Gonzalez in their rematch last December.
