Rising Boxing Star Diego Pacheco Set to Headline September 7th Main Event
Diego Pacheco, the rising boxing star from Los Angeles, is set to headline the September 7th main event in a super middleweight bout at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. BoxingScene has exclusively reported this latest development.
The 23-year-old Pacheco, boasting an impressive record of 21 wins with 17 knockouts, is currently in negotiations to face France’s Kevin Lele Sadjo (23-0, 20 KOs) in a DAZN-streamed fight. Pacheco’s recent unanimous decision victory over Shawn McCalman on April 16th in Las Vegas has elevated him to the number one contender in the World Boxing Organization’s super middleweight rankings.
Prior to this bout, Pacheco had secured five consecutive knockout or stoppage wins, and his team is “super-excited” about the increased exposure as he inches closer to the long-awaited title shot. Pacheco is trained by Jose Benavidez Sr., the father of former super middleweight titleholder David Benavidez, who is also Canelo Alvarez’s most high-profile mandatory challenger.
The super middleweight division has a logjam of contenders behind undisputed champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, including the IBF mandatory William Scull, who is expected to request an exception that would allow Alvarez to pursue a bout against his WBA mandatory, Edgar Berlanga. Pacheco’s team is determined to prove their fighter’s worth, with Benavidez Sr. expressing a desire to see Pacheco take on the likes of Jaime Munguia and Berlanga in the near future.
Dignity Health Sports Park, also known as the “War Grounds,” has a long history of hosting epic boxing battles, including the Timothy Bradley Jr.-Ruslan Provodnikov, Lucas Matthysse-John Molina, and Brandon Rios-Mike Alvarado matchups, as well as the classic Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez duels.
