Riakporhe Faces Billam-Smith in Highly Anticipated Cruiserweight Title Clash
As the boxing world eagerly awaits the thrilling cruiserweight title fight between Richard Riakporhe and reigning WBO champion Chris Billam-Smith, Riakporhe’s trainer, Angel Fernandez, insists that the pressure is not on his fighter’s shoulders.
Despite Riakporhe being the betting favorite and enjoying the hometown advantage at London’s Selhurst Park, Fernandez emphasizes that they are approaching the bout as the challenger. “The pressure is on the champion to defend the belt. We just train like the challenger and come in as the challenger. The pressure will always be on the champion,” he told TalkSport during the pre-fight open workout.
The Rematch and Improvement
Riakporhe and Billam-Smith previously met in a closely contested affair back in 2019, with Riakporhe securing a split decision victory. However, the intervening years have seen both boxers make significant improvements, setting the stage for an even more technical and hard-fought rematch.
“We’re gonna get a different fight,” Fernandez predicted. “Both of them have improved. I think it’s going to come down to the night, and the best man wins.” The seasoned Billam-Smith, who has navigated through several challenging fights in recent years, is expected to provide a stern test for the undefeated Riakporhe (17-0, 13 KOs).
Fernandez’s Cautious Approach
While some observers believe the timing is right for Riakporhe to repeat his victory and claim the world title, Fernandez is cautious about underestimating the champion.
“He just did what he needed to do [against Masternak]. Call it luck, but that’s what world champions do. Somehow, they win the fight. We have to be very careful with these kind of situations. There may be opportunities that we could give to CBS.”
A Focused, Relaxed Mindset
Ultimately, Fernandez and Riakporhe are approaching this high-stakes bout with a focused, yet relaxed mindset.
“There’s no pressure. We feel like we’re at home,” Fernandez stated. Boxing fans can look forward to a thrilling cruiserweight clash this weekend, as two of the division’s top contenders battle for the coveted WBO title.
