Boxing Prodigy Raul Curiel Shines under Guidance of Pepe Reilly at Wild Card Boxing Club
Pepe Reilly, a former 1992 Olympian and one of the assistant trainers at the renowned Wild Card Boxing Club, has been instrumental in the recent success of rising Mexican star Raul Curiel. The 28-year-old Curiel, who was in the same U.S. Olympic class as Reilly’s former teammate Oscar De La Hoya, has been on a dominant run, including a first-round stoppage of Jorge Marron Jr. in his DAZN debut on April 27th at the SaveMart Center in Fresno, California.
Curiel’s knockout streak now stands at 10 fights, dating back to April 2019, and he is currently ranked No. 7 by the WBC in the stacked welterweight division. Reilly, who cornered Curiel alongside Dicky Eklund Jr. for his latest outing, is optimistic about his fighter’s future prospects.
“Raul Curiel has been one of the best advancing fighters in our gym,” Reilly said. “He has been improving maybe more than anybody can think of.”
With the current state of the welterweight landscape, Curiel may soon find himself in line for a significant opportunity. Terence Crawford’s move up to junior middleweight, and the potential departures of other top 147-pound champions, could pave the way for Curiel to secure a meaningful fight in the near future.
Reilly believes Curiel’s dedication to his craft has been a key factor in his rapid development.
“I think he has really dedicated himself to his work lately and it is really showing,” Reilly added.
As Curiel continues to make waves in the boxing world, the guidance of experienced trainers like Pepe Reilly at the renowned Wild Card Boxing Club could prove instrumental in propelling the Mexican prospect towards a potential world title shot.
