Veteran Boxing Contender Prograis Eyes Showdown with Rising Star Smith
In a move that has piqued the interest of Boxing enthusiasts, veteran fighter Regis Prograis is eyeing a potential bout with up-and-coming talent Dalton Smith, according to promoter Eddie Hearn.
The 35-year-old Prograis, who recently suffered a defeat against Devin Haney that cost him his WBC super-lightweight title, is currently in the final stage of his three-fight promotional agreement with Matchroom. Despite the unconvincing victory over Danielito Zorrilla, Prograis remains a formidable contender.
Hearn revealed that Prograis is “waiting to fight” and is likely to step into the ring around August. “I’d quite like a fight with Dalton Smith. Possibly [he’ll travel to the U.K.],” the promoter said, acknowledging that while Prograis would prefer to fight in the U.S., he would consider a bout in England if the financial terms are favorable.
The 27-year-old Smith, who is among Matchroom’s most promising fighters, would face a significant challenge in taking on the experienced Prograis. “It’s a big jump up [for Smith] – a big step up. But, we’ll see,” Hearn stated, hinting at the potential for an exciting matchup between the two boxers.
Prograis also remains in contention to fight the winner of the upcoming IBF super-lightweight title bout between champion Subriel Matias and Liam Paro, scheduled for June 15th in Puerto Rico. However, the potential clash with Smith appears to be a compelling option for the veteran fighter as he looks to regain his footing in the competitive 140-pound division.
