Boxing Clash of Knockout Artists: Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Serhii Bohachuk Set to Collide
Las Vegas, August 5 – For Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Serhii Bohachuk, early finishes have become the norm, not the exception. As the two junior middleweights prepare to face off on August 10th at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, the expectation is that their clash will be a true battle of knockout artists.
Ortiz (21-0, 21 KOs), hailing from Grand Prairie, Texas, has yet to go the distance in his professional career, having finished each of his 21 fights via stoppage. His most recent outings saw him blowing out Ghana’s Frederick Lawson in the first round and then repeating the feat against Thomas Dulorme. After a 17-month layoff due to health issues, Ortiz is eager to solidify his status as one of the top 154-pound fighters in the world.
“This fight is the fight that solidifies me as a top 154 fighter,” said Ortiz. “This is also the fight that shows everyone that nothing has changed: I am still one of the best fighters in the world.”
Bohachuk (24-1, 23 KOs), hailing from Vinitza, Ukraine, has faced his own challenges both in and out of the ring. The ongoing conflict in his home country and visa complications have added to the obstacles he has had to overcome. However, his in-ring dominance has been near-flawless, with his only blemish being an eighth-round TKO loss against Brandon Adams in 2021. Most recently, Bohachuk captured an interim WBC title with a dominant points victory over former world champion Brian Mendoza.
“I fought hard to win the WBC interim world title, and now I am looking to defend this title for my goal of becoming the ultimate world champion,” said Bohachuk. “I know Vergil Ortiz – he is a very tough competitor. But on Aug. 10, I will show that I am the best in the division.”
With a combined 44 knockouts in 45 professional victories, it’s no surprise that Golden Boy Promotions’ chairman and CEO, Oscar De La Hoya, has high expectations for this matchup.
“Talk about bombs away,” De La Hoya said. “With 44 knockouts in 45 victories between Vergil and Bohachuk, there is almost no way this fight is going the distance.”
