Boxing Fans Eagerly Await the Rise of Mexico’s Next Canelo Alvarez
For years, boxing enthusiasts across Mexico and the globe have been captivated by the performances of the country’s biggest star, Canelo Alvarez. As the sun begins to set on Canelo’s illustrious Hall of Fame career, the question arises: who will be the next boxing icon to emerge from Mexico?
Hailing from the fight-breeding city of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Canelo has captivated fans with his dominance, selling out the Akron Stadium in his hometown last year with an estimated 70,000 spectators witnessing his victory over John Ryder. However, the search is on for the next Mexican boxing prodigy to follow in Canelo’s footsteps.
The Rise of the Molina Clan
One potential candidate is the recently Olympic-qualified Marco Verde from the state of Sinaloa. Similar to Canelo and his family of fighters, the Molina clan is also poised to make a significant impact on the sport. Notably, the youngest brother, 17-year-old Oswaldo “Aldo” Molina, is set to make his professional debut later this year, with a long-term management agreement in place and a plan to debut on ESPN+ this summer under the affiliation of Top Rank and their Mexican domestic promoter, Miura Boxing.
“I’m grateful for my father who has led me to this point,” said Aldo. “I have worked extremely hard and will continue to do so. I understand the importance of a good team and I’m excited about the future.”
Aldo Molina boasts an impressive amateur resume, having competed in National Olympic Qualifiers at just 16 and amassing over 200 documented bouts with multiple national titles to his name. While it’s still too early to crown Aldo Molina as the next Canelo Alvarez, the young boxer is aiming high and eager to learn, expressing his desire to “do camps in the USA and learn as much as possible for many years to come and ultimately becoming a world champion.” The boxing world will be closely watching as the next generation of Mexican talent emerges, with the potential to captivate fans both at home and abroad.
