Upcoming Mexican Independence Day Fight for Boxing Superstar Canelo Alvarez Remains Uncertain
As the traditional Mexican Independence Day weekend in September approaches, the boxing world waits in anticipation for Saul “Canelo Alvarez’s” next bout. The undisputed super middleweight champion has typically fought during this celebratory period, but an opponent has not yet been announced for the highly anticipated event.
If Alvarez plans to fight on September 14th, a challenger must be named soon to allow for proper promotion of the event. Last year, Alvarez’s Mexican Independence Day weekend fight against Jermell Charlo was announced on June 30th, suggesting a similar timeline for this year’s bout.
“I think he’ll fight Berlanga next,” Hearn stated on Saturday night in Phoenix, following Jesse Rodriguez’s knockout win against Juan Francisco Estrada. Hearn cited Berlanga’s growing popularity and status as Alvarez’s WBA mandatory challenger as factors that make the fight an appealing option.
Should Alvarez compete in Las Vegas on September 14th, he may face stiff competition from UFC 306, which is scheduled to take place at the Sphere on the same date. UFC President and CEO Dana White has promised a blockbuster event that will be “a f***ing love letter to the Mexican people,” leading many to speculate whether Conor McGregor’s return fight could be rescheduled to headline the Sphere on that date.
Berlanga Confident in Securing Alvarez Bout
Berlanga himself expressed confidence in securing the Alvarez bout, stating in May that he is “100 percent confident” the fight will happen in September, noting the potential for strong pay-per-view numbers due to the “Mexico versus Puerto Rico” narrative.
As the boxing community eagerly awaits the announcement of Canelo Alvarez’s next opponent, the September 14th date looms large, with the potential for a blockbuster event or a clash of combat sports giants on the horizon.
