Boxing Superstar Pacquiao Eyeing Record-Breaking Sixth Welterweight Title
Boxing icon Manny Pacquiao is determined to make history once again, as he sets his sights on capturing a welterweight title for a record sixth time. The 45-year-old Filipino legend’s sincerity and passion for the sport remain as evident as ever, with his advisor, Sean Gibbons, providing an update on the ongoing negotiations.
Gibbons revealed that Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 KOs) is already two weeks into his pre-training-camp conditioning in the Philippines, driven by his love for the competition and desire to achieve what others believe he cannot. “Manny loves the competition. He loves doing things people don’t believe he can do,” Gibbons told BoxingScene.
Target Venue and Broadcaster
The target for Pacquiao’s next bout is Las Vegas in October or November, with Premier Boxing Champions on Amazon Prime Video being the likely broadcaster, barring any unexpected involvement from Saudi Arabia. The details surrounding the finances are still being worked out, but the stars seem to be aligning for this historic matchup.
Potential Opponent and Significance
Pacquiao’s quest to become a six-time welterweight champion will see him take on the newly anointed WBC champion, Mario Barrios (29-2, 18 KOs). Gibbons emphasized the significance of this potential fight, noting that Pacquiao’s first world title, a flyweight strap, was a WBC belt, making this a full-circle moment for the boxing legend.
“Can you imagine him winning another one all these years later?” Gibbons asked, expressing his excitement over the possibilities. He also highlighted Pacquiao’s impressive form, stating that the boxer is as fast and quick as he was five to ten years ago, and that “80 percent of Manny Pacquiao beats most of the guys out there today.”
By seeking to capture the welterweight title for a record sixth time, Pacquiao aims to solidify his status as the greatest 147-pounder in the sport’s history. Gibbons pointed out that Pacquiao’s record against Hall of Fame opponents is unmatched, with nine such names on his resume, compared to none for Terence Crawford.
This potential bout against Barrios represents Pacquiao’s desire to enrich his legacy further and prove once again that he is the true king of the welterweight division.
