Exciting Prospects for a Blockbuster Lightweight Boxing Showdown (Boxing News)
The boxing world is buzzing with the potential for a highly anticipated unification bout between lightweight champions Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Vasiliy Lomachenko. According to promoter Bob Arum, representatives from both camps plan to convene “shortly” to discuss the possibility of staging this showdown in the late fall.
Arum, who promotes Lomachenko, was full of praise for Davis’ recent performance, describing him as a “very good, powerful kid, good puncher” following his impressive eighth-round knockout victory over contender Frank Martin in the main event of the 100th championship fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
“We’re up for that fight. Lomachenko’s up for that,” Arum declared, indicating that both sides are eager to make this boxing event a reality. The meeting could take place as early as this week, as Davis’ team is already in Las Vegas, and Top Rank has a scheduled fight on Friday, featuring their WBO featherweight champion Rafael Espinoza.
Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) has made it clear that he is ready to take on any major opponent, particularly the experienced Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs), who recently captured the IBF lightweight title by stopping former titleholder George Kambosos in the 11th round.
While Top Rank has other lightweight champions, such as the undefeated, three-division champion Shakur Stevenson and the new WBO titleholder Denys Berinchyk, Arum believes that a Davis-Lomachenko showdown would generate more revenue and attention than a potential Stevenson-Berinchyk unification bout.
“Everything’s up in the air. There’s a lot of possibilities,” Arum said, hinting at the exciting landscape of the lightweight division. “And possibilities are good, because they keep everyone busy.”
Stay tuned for updates on this potential boxing blockbuster, as the details of the Davis-Lomachenko clash continue to unfold.
