Aussie Underdog Liam Paro Stuns Matias to Claim IBF Super Lightweight Title in Masterclass Performance
In a stunning upset, Australian boxer Liam Paro defeated the heavily favored Subriel Matias via unanimous decision to capture the IBF super lightweight world title. Promoter Eddie Hearn hailed Paro’s victory as “a masterclass” performance.
The 28-year-old Paro traveled from Australia to Puerto Rico, Matias’ home country, and managed to dethrone the reigning champion with a virtuoso display. Matias, known for his high punch volume and knockout power, was unable to overcome Paro’s tactical brilliance.
“Liam [always] had an answer for him,” Hearn said. “He stood and fought with him. We said he’d have to get his respect. He did that. He pushed him back. He boxed off the back foot. It was an absolute masterclass.”
Hearn recognized that this victory will significantly change the trajectory of Paro’s career, stating, “He did it – he changed his life. It’s an incredible performance – an incredible win, as a massive underdog. And we said, he can do it. He’s got the skills – he’s got the ability – but he’s the one that had the cojones to come here. He’s just won the world title off one of the most dangerous men at 140lbs in his backyard.”
With the title secured, Hearn indicated that it is “time to bring him home to Australia,” highlighting the strong support the Australian government provides for major boxing events. As for Paro’s next move, Hearn mentioned potential opponents such as Ryan Garcia, Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz, Teofimo Lopez, and the upcoming mandatory challenger, Richardson Hitchens.
“This is just an incredible night for Australian boxing and Liam Paro, a massive underdog, to come in and do that in an unbelievable performance,” Hearn concluded.
