Boxing News: Okolie Triumphs in Poland, Reclaims Cruiserweight Title
On March 4th, in Rzeszow, Poland, London’s Lawrence Okolie made a triumphant return to the ring, reclaiming the WBC bridgerweight title with a dominant first-round stoppage of previously undefeated Polish fighter Lukasz Rozanski.
Okolie, a former Olympian and WBO cruiserweight champion, started strong and quickly took control of the fight. The local crowd was firmly behind Rozanski, but Okolie’s precise timing and crisp right hand proved too much for the Polish fighter. Okolie dropped Rozanski three times before the referee waved off the contest at the 2:55 mark of the opening round.
“I think this was the best moment in boxing for me, I’m super happy,” said Okolie after the fight. “New weight, I put the KO back in Okolie, I said I was going to go in there from round one and try to get the knockout and I went in there and done that.”
The victory improved Okolie’s professional record to 20-1 with 15 knockouts, while Rozanski suffered his first career defeat, dropping to 15-1 with 14 KOs.
Okolie’s triumph marked his first fight with new trainer Joe Gallagher in his corner, having previously worked with Shane McGuigan and SugarHill Steward. The win also comes after Okolie’s only professional loss, which occurred last May against former stablemate Chris Billam-Smith.
The Rzeszow card featured several other notable results, including:
- A two-round victory for Kamil Slendak
- A four-round win for Tobiasz Zarzeczny
- A seventh-round stoppage for Fiodor Czerkaszyn
