Hometown Hero Lamont Roach Jr. Defends WBA Super Featherweight Title in Washington, DC
Lamont Roach Jr. is thrilled to defend his WBA super featherweight title in a championship homecoming bout on June 28 at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Washington, DC. Roach, who captured the crown from Dominican southpaw Hector Luis Garcia last November on the David Benavidez-Demetrius Andrade undercard in Las Vegas, will face undefeated Irishman Feargal McCrory in the highly anticipated main event.
The 24-year-old Roach, who boasts a record of 24-1-1 with 9 knockouts, is thrilled to be headlining in front of his hometown fans. “This homecoming is everything to me,” Roach expressed. “The last time I fought at home was in 2017 at the MGM National Harbor, where I sold out the venue on a Thursday night ESPN headline and defended a youth title. I promised my fans, family, and friends that I’d be bringing a world title home, and that’s exactly what I’m doing.”
Roach’s challenger, the undefeated McCrory (16-0, 8 KOs), is a southpaw, but the champion is confident in his abilities to handle the style. “I’ve done tremendous against southpaws,” Roach noted. “I don’t have a problem with fighting them, even early in my pro career when I faced tough opponents like that.”
The fight will be broadcast live on ProBox TV and is promoted by Garry Jonas, along with Roach Sr.’s NoXcuse Promotions. Roach is pleased to have his father as his trainer and manager, stating, “I’m so blessed to have my dad as my trainer, my manager, and he just knows how to do it. It’s like magic.”
The 28-year-old Roach, hailing from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, is eager to put on a show for his hometown fans. “They’ve been with me for a long time, even if they couldn’t make it out to the fights,” Roach said. “I know that when I make that walkout, it’s going to be a crazy atmosphere. I know that those people are 99 per cent there solely to see me, and to protect the city that I have on my back and my shoulders. That’s what I do it for.”
