Highly Anticipated Rematch: Josh Taylor vs. Jack Catterall
On Saturday, May 25th, the highly anticipated rematch between Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall will finally take place at the First Direct Arena in Leeds, United Kingdom. The two bitter rivals are set to square off, with their last encounter in 2022 seeing then-undisputed super lightweight champion Taylor narrowly secure a split-decision victory despite Catterall outlanding him 120 to 73.
“It’s a big fight in the UK. I am motivated for this fight, and I don’t particularly like the guy. I want to shut his mouth and put him back under his rock and move on with my career,” Taylor told BoxingScene.
Many believed Catterall (28-1, 13 KOs) was the rightful winner, but an immediate sequel was not in the cards as Taylor (19-1, 13 KOs) dropped his share of titles and suffered a torn plantar fascia that postponed a planned February 2023 rematch. Instead, Taylor opted to fight and ultimately lose his WBO 140-pound crown to Teofimo Lopez Jr. in June.
Now, both fighters appear ready for their highly anticipated showdown. Taylor is eager to “close the negativity and the cloud of doubt” surrounding his previous performance and deliver a dominant display against Catterall.
“[The first fight] was a terrible performance, and that’s being generous. It was crap. I need to improve on everything from that fight. That Josh Taylor will never show up as long as I box. I am going to destroy Jack Caterall in absolutely every single department,” he continued.
The 33-year-old “Tartan Tornado” is also eyeing a potential rematch with Lopez, as he believes the “best of me is beating Teofimo Lopez.” Taylor’s loss to the American was a humbling experience, but he remains confident that he can overcome Lopez when operating at his full potential.
