Hearn Touts Catterall’s World Title Prospects After Decisive Victory Over Taylor
On a thrilling night at the First Direct Arena in Leeds, promoter Eddie Hearn expressed his optimism about Jack Catterall’s prospects for a world title fight following his decisive victory over bitter rival Josh Taylor.
Catterall thoroughly outclassed Taylor over 12 fast-paced rounds, leaving the crowd and worldwide audience watching on DAZN and ESPN+ in awe. Hearn recognized the significance of Catterall’s performance, stating, “After a fight like that, with that kind of profile in front of a sold-out crowd and huge worldwide audience, Jack is right up there.“
The promoter acknowledged the clamor for a trilogy fight between Catterall and Taylor, but emphasized the importance of securing the biggest fights for Catterall’s career. “For me, I will always look at the biggest fights out there. But it’s also important we look at the big fights for the career of Jack Catterall,” Hearn said.
Hearn believes Catterall should already be an undisputed world champion, having been denied the decision in his first fight with Taylor. Now, the focus is on positioning Catterall for a world title opportunity, and Hearn believes the recent performance has made that task much easier.
“Jack Catterall is the guy who should be fighting Teofimo Lopez, and we believe he will beat him all day long. We believe that Jack should be a world champion now, but that’s a thing of the past and is now the next step and the natural step. One thing we know for sure, it will be a massive fight next – and, if I have a choice, it will be for a world title against Lopez.“
With upcoming bouts involving Subriel Matias, Liam Paro, Devin Haney, and Sandor Martin, as well as Teofimo Lopez’s fight against Steve Claggett, which Hearn described as “a disgrace” and “a joke,” the promoter stated that Catterall should be the one challenging Lopez for the WBO light welterweight title.
