Irish Super Middleweight Contender Quigley Eyeing Pacheco Clash on Sept. 7
Irish super middleweight contender Jason Quigley has confirmed he is in negotiations to face rising star Diego Pacheco on September 7th at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. The decorated former amateur star believes talks could be finalized this week, though he acknowledged he is not the only name in the running for the bout against the 23-year-old Los Angeles native.
Quigley, 33, is eager to take on the undefeated Pacheco (21-0, 17 KOs), who is viewed as a promising talent in the division. “We’re very interested,” said Quigley. “The first offer was pretty low, so we’re just negotiating to see if we can make it work.” The Irishman understands Pacheco’s team may explore cheaper or easier opponent options, but believes he poses a greater threat than some of the other names linked to the young contender.
“I think he knows he comes in as the opponent, and he’s there to put on a show but knows he’s an opponent – whereas I’m not an opponent. In my head, I’m coming in there only to win,” Quigley stated.
The Dignity Health Sports Park is familiar territory for Quigley, who scored a win there in his second professional fight a decade ago.
While Quigley (21-3, 14 KOs) has not competed since his defeat against Edgar Berlanga last June, he has remained active in the gym and is ready to work with respected coach Andy Lee on his preparation. Quigley is aware that a victory over Pacheco could thrust him into the mix for a major fight, potentially against the likes of Canelo Alvarez should Pacheco defeat him.
“Definitely, you look at Berlanga now, he’s right in contention now of fighting Canelo. And that’s the kind of opportunity that’s out there,” Quigley said. The Irish boxer is eager to seize this chance, believing Pacheco has yet to prove he is the “big star” his team envisions.
“His last performance wasn’t great; he was in with a boxer and didn’t look too hot against him. I know they’re going to be gauging him off me and the Berlanga performance. But they’ll be in for a big shock if this fight happens, because I believe he’s there for the taking and I believe I can take him out.”
Quigley and his team are waiting to hear back this week on whether the fight with Pacheco can be finalized, but the experienced contender is confident he can provide the promoters with a reliable, professional performance should the matchup come to fruition.
