Inoue and Nery Set for Unified Super Bantamweight Title Clash in Japan
As the highly anticipated unified super bantamweight title fight between Naoya Inoue and Mexican challenger Luis Nery approached, the scene in Yokohama was one of mutual respect between the two fighters. Veteran promoter Bob Arum was brimming with excitement about the significance of the event.
“This is, I think, the greatest, most important boxing event in the history of Japan,” declared Arum, the Top Rank boss, at the pre-fight press conference. He noted that it had been over 30 years since the iconic Mike Tyson-Buster Douglas bout at the Tokyo Dome, and now the famous stadium would once again host a major boxing spectacle.
Arum expected a crowd of around 55,000 to witness the showdown, with Nery – a familiar face in Japan – aiming to spoil the showcase for the heavily favored Inoue.
“The challenger, Nery, is a familiar face here in Japan and he is one of the best fighters in the lighter weight divisions in the world,” Arum said. “Like all Mexican fighters, he will come here to do his best to emerge victorious on Monday night.”
However, Arum acknowledged that the global interest was firmly centered on the “Monster” Inoue, who he described as a “legend in the sport of boxing” and the consensus pound-for-pound number one fighter in the world.
“Boxing fans not only here in Japan but all over the world will be watching this event to see the ‘Monster’ perform, because he is always Mr Excitement,” Arum said confidently.
The veteran promoter concluded by declaring that this event would “go down in history as a memorable, memorable event in the history of the sport of boxing.”
