Las Vegas Boxing Showdown: Gervonta “Tank” Davis Returns After 14-Month Hiatus to Face Frank Martin
Las Vegas, April 15th, 2023 – Gervonta “Tank” Davis makes his highly anticipated return to the boxing ring this Saturday as he faces Frank Martin at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The 29-year-old Davis, who boasts an impressive 29-0 record with 27 knockouts, has not stepped into the ring since his seventh-round stoppage of Ryan Garcia in one of 2023’s blockbuster boxing events last April.
It has been a typical roller coaster week for the Baltimore boxing star. While he initially skipped the Grand Arrivals to kick off fight week on Tuesday, Davis later made an “off-diary” appearance at the public workouts to address his fans. The pre-fight tension escalated during the press conference and at the weigh-in, where Davis and Martin exchanged verbal jabs, with the champion even performing a back-flip after stepping off the scales.
Martin, a fellow southpaw with an 18-0 record (12 KOs), is a slick and quick challenger who is prepared to get his hands dirty to settle a feud that has simmered since an ill-tempered sparring session years ago. The Detroit-born boxer has fought just once in the last 18 months, outscoring Artem Harutyunyan over 12 rounds last July.
“I believe Davis will not afford me the early rounds and I promise to ‘push every button’ that the champion has.” – Frank Martin
Despite the jump in class and occasion, Martin is confident in his abilities to pull off the upset. However, Davis’ greater experience in the ring and on the big stage could prove to be the deciding factor.
In the co-main event, David Benavidez takes on former champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk in a light heavyweight clash. Benavidez, 28-0 with 24 KOs, is looking to make a statement in his first fight at the 175-pound limit, while the 37-year-old Gvozdyk, 20-1 (16 KOs), aims to bounce back after a long layoff.
With the tension and anticipation building, boxing fans are in for an exciting night of action at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
