Boxing Rising Star Gary Antuanne Russell Seeks Interim Title in Vegas Showdown
As a former high school valedictorian and Olympic boxer born into a fighting family, Gary Antuanne Russell has been on a mission since turning professional. The 27-year-old has racked up 17 consecutive knockout wins to start his career, and he’s now set to face undefeated Albert Puello for an interim junior welterweight title on the undercard of the Gervonta Davis-Frank Martin lightweight title fight on June 15 at the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Russell’s Journey and Family Legacy
Russell (17-0, 17 KOs) is an athletic, technically sound boxer who has benefited from the wealth of experience shared by his father, Gary Russell Sr., a former pro who trained several of his sons, and his brother, Gary Russell Jr., a former featherweight titleholder. Nicknamed “The Last” as a nod to his place in the Russell boxing lineage, Gary Antuanne may be the family’s best hope to reach the sport’s pinnacle.
“I love the bright lights,” Russell said during the virtual press conference. “This is my world now, and at this point, I just want to excel.”
Despite his impressive undefeated record and knockout streak, Russell has yet to face the brightest of lights in the ring, with stoppages of Viktor Postol and Rances Barthelemy marking his two most significant wins. The clock is ticking, as he has fought just twice in the past two years, and his competition has shown little sign of improvement.
Facing the Undefeated Puello
Puello, a 27-year-old undefeated veteran, may present a tougher challenge for Russell. However, the even-keeled Russell appears to be taking Puello as seriously as any other threat.
“Puello is another opponent who’s in the way,” he said. “We’re on a mission, and I plan to execute.”
The transition in Russell’s corner, following the passing of his father two years ago and the death of his brother Gary Boosa in 2019, has likely contributed to his slowed progress. Nevertheless, he has been adamant about targeting titles and the fighters who hold them, including WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney.
“I want to bring boxing back to its natural state,” Russell said. “I want to climb the ladder and fight who I’m supposed to. I want to fight the guys with great credentials.”
With his brother in his corner and the echoes of his father’s instructions in his ear, Gary Antuanne Russell is determined to honor his family’s legacy and continue his quest for boxing’s highest honors.
