Experienced Former World Champion Jessie Magdaleno Seeks Redemption Against Rising Featherweight Star Brandon Figueroa
Las Vegas, NV – May 2, 2023
Jessie Magdaleno, a former world champion, will lean on his vast experience as he takes on the up-and-coming Brandon Figueroa in a highly anticipated interim WBC featherweight title fight on May 4th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The bout will serve as the undercard for the Canelo Alvarez-Jaime Munguia Prime Video pay-per-view event.
Magdaleno (29-2, 18 KOs) has faced a slow period in recent years, with only three fights since 2020, including a loss to the current WBA featherweight champion, Raymond Ford. The 31-year-old Las Vegas native spent the majority of his career with Top Rank Inc. as his lead promoter, but his most recent bout was with Matchroom Boxing, and this upcoming fight is being promoted by Premier Boxing Champions.
In contrast, Figueroa (24-1-1, 18 KOs), who was a rising prospect during Magdaleno’s title reign, has emerged as one of the prominent names in the featherweight division, largely due to his entertaining fighting style. The 27-year-old Figueroa will be looking to capitalize on his momentum and secure a significant victory over the experienced Magdaleno.
Magdaleno, who won the WBO super bantamweight world title in 2016 with a victory over future Hall-of-Famer Nonito Donaire, believes his vast experience and quality of opposition will give him an edge over his younger opponent.
“Of course, I have an edge in experience,” said Magdaleno. “I’ve been boxing for a long time, and I know Brandon has put in his work as well. I don’t overlook anybody.”
However, Magdaleno is not taking Figueroa lightly, acknowledging the challenges he poses.
“I know Brandon comes to fight,” said Magdaleno. “He’s a come-forward fighter who throws a lot of punches. He comes in great shape every time. We watch tapes, and we know he’s a good fighter like I am.”
As Magdaleno prepares for the bout, he has returned to his signature blonde hairstyle, a look he sported when he became a world champion. The former champion is confident that this change will help him recapture the magic of his title-winning days.
“Last time I had the blonde hair, I became world champion,” said Magdaleno. “I’m just ready to get back in here and show everybody what I’m about.”
The interim WBC featherweight title fight between Jessie Magdaleno and Brandon Figueroa is sure to be a thrilling affair, as the experienced former champion looks to turn back the clock and overcome the rising star in front of the Las Vegas crowd.
