Featherweight Titleholder Rafael Espinoza to Defend Belt Against Sergio Chirino in Las Vegas on June 21
Las Vegas, June 11 – Featherweight world champion Rafael Espinoza (24-0, 20 KOs) will make the first defense of his title against fellow Mexican boxer Sergio Chirino (22-1, 13 KOs) at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas on June 21.
Espinoza captured the featherweight crown last December in a “Fight of the Year” contender against Robeisy Ramirez. Despite being knocked down in the fifth round, the 6-foot-1 champion rallied late and secured a majority decision victory.
“I’m excited to return to the ring and defend my title,” said Espinoza. “I know I’ll be facing a tough Mexican challenger, but I’m training hard and ready to fight with grit and heart to retain my belt.”
Chirino, who suffered an early loss to Mauricio Lara in 2018, has since remained undefeated, including victories over Ally Mwerangi and Sebastian Tinoco Chavez. He is confident he can dethrone the reigning champion.
“Mexicans are known for our heart, and whenever two of us are in the ring, it’s a battle,” Chirino stated. “I’ve earned this opportunity, and I’m coming to take that title home.”
Co-Main Event and Undercard
The co-main event will feature a junior lightweight clash between undefeated Andres Cortes and Abraham Nova. Additionally, rising middleweights Troy Isley and Javier Martinez will reignite their fierce amateur rivalry.
The action-packed card will stream live in the U.S. on ESPN+ and on Sky Sports in the U.K. and Ireland.
