Featherweight Champion Espinoza Eyeing Pound-for-Pound Status
Guadalajara native Rafael Espinoza has firmly established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the featherweight division. However, the 30-year-old titleholder (25-0, 21 KOs) now has his sights set on an even loftier goal – cementing his status as a pound-for-pound elite fighter.
Espinoza took a significant step towards realizing that ambition on Friday, delivering a dominant fourth-round TKO victory over Sergio Chirino at the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas. The featherweight champion knocked down his opponent thrice – in the first, third, and fourth rounds – to emphatically defend his title.
“It was my dream, really. I thought about it a lot,” Espinoza said through a translator, reflecting on the significance of competing in his first title defense in the fight capital of the world. “Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to fight in Las Vegas, and now I am here. I think what happened in that last fight, or after becoming a champion, I did get better.”
Espinoza’s towering 6-foot-1 frame is highly unusual for the 126-pound division, and he utilized his height advantage to outclass the 5-foot-9 Chirino (22-2, 13 KOs) on Friday. This dominant performance came on the heels of Espinoza’s memorable upset victory over two-time Olympic gold medalist and featherweight titleholder Robeisy Ramirez last December.
Eyeing Pound-for-Pound Status
Now, the Mexican champion is eager to face other elite opponents, including the undisputed junior featherweight king Naoya Inoue, as he aims to cement his place among the sport’s pound-for-pound best. Espinoza has even expressed willingness to take on Ramirez in a rematch, despite the latter’s claims that the champion is reluctant to do so.
“I am ready and willing because I want to be a pound-for-pound fighter,” Espinoza declared. “I would like to [fight in] Guadalajara or Mexico, if possible. If not, we could do it here in Las Vegas.”
With his sights set on the upper echelon of the sport, Espinoza appears poised to take on all comers as he continues his quest to become recognized as one of boxing’s true elite.
