The European Boxing Union’s Annual Assembly and Boxing News Highlights
The European Boxing Union (EBU) held its annual General Assembly last weekend in Tbilisi, Georgian Republic, where several key decisions and updates were announced.
One notable change is the renaming of the EBU female title to the Enza Jacoponi title, honoring the EBU’s long-serving General Secretary who has held the position since 1990. The EBU also reaffirmed its policy of not collaborating with other boxing organizations regarding European titles.
The annual EBU award winners were revealed, with Britain’s Liam Davies named Male Fighter of the Year for his junior featherweight title reign in 2023. The Enza Jacoponi Fighter of the Year award was shared by Spain’s Sheila Martinez and Poland’s Laura Grzyb. The Fight of the Year was awarded to Agit Kabayel’s TKO3 victory over Agron Smakici for the EBU heavyweight title.
“French promoter EuroProm, headed by Gerard Teysseron, was named Promoter of the Year.”
Additionally, the EBU upheld its current policy preventing boxers from Russia and Belarus from competing for EBU titles due to the ongoing Ukraine conflict. The Turkish Professional Boxing Commission was granted full EBU membership, while the Lithuanian Boxing Federation replaced the “sleeping” Lithuanian Professional Boxing League as a new member.
