Boxing News: EBU Orders Weiss vs. Avanesyan Title Clash
In a highly anticipated matchup, the European Boxing Union (EBU) has ordered Jordy Weiss to defend his EBU welterweight title against former champion, David Avanesyan. The purse bids are scheduled to be opened on Monday, May 6, unless a deal can be reached beforehand.
Avanesyan, a former WBA welterweight champion, first won the European title in 2019 when he traveled to Bilbao and dethroned the unbeaten home favorite, Kerman Lejarraga, in an exciting nine-round battle. The Armenian went on to make five successful title defenses, establishing himself as a formidable and ruthless champion.
Avanesyan eventually vacated the EBU title ahead of his WBO welterweight title fight with the pound-for-pound star, Terence Crawford, which took place in December 2022. Despite a decent account of himself, Avanesyan succumbed to Crawford’s class and was stopped in the sixth round.
Weiss, on the other hand, claimed the vacant EBU title in April 2022 after a split-draw against Jon Miguez. He then went on to secure the prestigious title by outpointing Meriton Karaxha and has since made one successful defense.
Avanesyan’s manager, Neil Marsh, expressed the fighter’s affection for the EBU title and his eagerness to reclaim the belt he never lost in the ring. This bout provides Avanesyan with a pathway back to major fights, while also giving Weiss the opportunity to prove his world-class credentials.
“We’ve been messed about a couple of times regarding potential fights, but we’ve been happy to be patient for the right opportunity because it’s about making the right fight. We also understand just how important the EBU title is and how big and important a part it’s played in David’s past,” Marsh stated.
The clash between Weiss and Avanesyan promises to be a thrilling encounter, with both fighters vying to assert their dominance in the welterweight division.
