The story began in 2009, when a 21-year-old Tyson Fury, then a 12-0 heavyweight, made a bold decision to travel from Manchester to Detroit in search of Steward, the world’s greatest trainer. Fury introduced himself to Steward’s assistant, Javan “SugarHill” Steward, declaring, “I’m the next heavyweight champion of the world, Tyson Fury.”
Intrigued by the young boxer’s confidence, Emanuel Steward welcomed Fury, inviting him to train at the famed Kronk Gym and even arranging a larger-than-average bed to accommodate Fury’s towering frame. The two quickly formed a close bond, with Steward seeing potential in the British newcomer that even he had not fully anticipated.
