Boxing News: David Morrell Set to Challenge for WBA Light Heavyweight Title
In a significant development in the boxing world, David Morrell (10-0, 9 KOs), the current WBA’s secondary super middleweight titleholder, is reportedly set to move up in weight and challenge for a secondary WBA light heavyweight title against Radivoje Kalajdzic (29-2, 21 KOs) on June 22.
This move follows the footsteps of fellow boxer David Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs), who will also be competing on the same card, taking on Oleksandr Gvodzyk (20-1, 16 KOs) for the WBC interim title at 175 pounds.
Both Morrell and Benavidez’s fights will serve as the undercard for Gervonta Davis’ WBA lightweight title defense against Frank Martin. While there has been no official confirmation from Premier Boxing Champions, the event is expected to take place in Houston, Texas, and be broadcast live on Amazon Prime PPV.
According to reporter Fernando Sabatini, if Morrell emerges victorious against Kalajdzic and claims the secondary WBA light heavyweight title, he will be required to relinquish his WBA’s secondary title at the super middleweight division.
The decision by Morrell and Benavidez to move up in weight class is largely attributed to their ongoing frustration with the dominance of undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs). Alvarez is set to defend his titles against Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) on May 4 at the T-Mobile Arena.
By competing in the light heavyweight division, Morrell will position himself to potentially face the winner of the highly anticipated undisputed encounter between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitrii Bivol, which is scheduled to take place on June 1 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
