In an intense undercard matchup at the Chumash Casino, flyweight prospect Daniel Barrera secured a hard-fought unanimous decision victory over the determined Christian Robles on the Callum Walsh-Carlos Cervantes fight card.
The 22-year-old Barrera (7-0-1, 4 KOs) from Eastvale, California, faced an uncomfortable challenge against the gritty Robles (8-3, 3 KOs) from Lakewood, California. Despite not delivering his best performance, Barrera emerged victorious with scores of 77-75, 79-73, and 77-75.
“We knew he was going to be tough,” Barrera admitted after the fight. “I could have done better on my end.”
Robles, 27, rocked Barrera in the second round with a well-timed right hand, as his constant pressure and effective jab forced Barrera to rely heavily on his defense.
In the fifth round, a cut opened over Barrera’s left eye, which he attributed to a headbutt. Undeterred, the highly touted prospect closed the fight strongly, landing brutal shots in the seventh round that caught Robles’ attention. With the fight hanging in the balance, Barrera landed a big right hand in the final minute of the eighth round, seemingly securing the victory.
