Cuban Junior Welterweight Kevin “Downtown” Brown Aims to Make an Extraordinary Name in the Boxing World
On May 30th, Cuban junior welterweight Kevin “Downtown” Brown (4-0, 3 KOs) will face fellow Cuban compatriot Idalberto Umara (12-2, 8 KOs) at the Caribe Royale Hotel in Orlando, Florida. The bout will be broadcast live on DAZN.
Brown, a decorated Cuban amateur, is being fast-tracked as a professional and sees this fight against the 23-year-old Umara as his first significant test. “I know he is a fellow countryman from Cuba, so he is well trained from his youth, and he brings a lot of skill to the ring,” said Brown. “I’m in the business of [knocking out] my opponents, and this fight won’t be any different.”
“Coach Salas and I have put a lot of hard work in, and it will show on fight night. I’m in the best shape of my life, and I’m getting the proper sparring to be ready for this fight.”
The 30-year-old Brown trains in Las Vegas with renowned coach Ismael Salas, who has worked with a host of top contenders, including Brian Mendoza, Jorge Linares, Guillermo Rigondeaux, Yuriorkis Gamboa, and Yordenis Ugas.
One way for Brown to stand out and make a name for himself would be to win a world title, which he believes is within his reach. He has fought in 10-round bouts in his last three fights and turned professional in an eight-round contest. Brown holds a notable win over Julian “The Quiet Storm” Smith, a deaf boxer who is a fan favorite and upset Orestes Velazquez in February.
“I’m ready to take on all contenders, and hopefully I’ll be in a position to fight for a world title in 2025. Many doors will open with a victory against Umara. Winning these types of fights will help me climb up the rankings faster. I only want to fight the best possible opponents, and this is a great opportunity to show the world what I’m made of.”
