Contender Christian Mbilli Believes Canelo vs. Munguia is an “Easy Fight” for the Unified Champion
According to a recent interview with BoxingScene, super middleweight contender Christian Mbilli has stated that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s upcoming undisputed title defense against Jaime Munguia should be an “easy fight” for the unified champion.
Canelo’s showdown with fellow Mexican Munguia is set to take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on May 4, coinciding with the Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Mbilli believes Munguia will need to employ a relentless pressure style and outstanding defense to have any chance of dethroning the dominant Canelo.
“I think Munguia will need to use a lot of pressure,” Mbilli responded when asked how Munguia could potentially beat Canelo. “He will need a really good defense, he’ll have to stay focused and move his head the whole fight. I hope he has good conditioning. That’s it, that’s all he can do.”
Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) will be making his fourth consecutive defense of the undisputed super middleweight championship against Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs), a former 154-pound titleholder who is making his third straight appearance at the 168-pound limit.
In his last outing, Canelo secured a wide unanimous decision victory over Jermell Charlo in Las Vegas, while Munguia most recently claimed a ninth-round stoppage win against John Ryder in January.
Mbilli, who is ranked within the top four for all of Canelo’s titles, believes the champion’s recent performances suggest he may be on the decline. However, the Frenchman still believes Canelo should emerge victorious, potentially even via knockout, though he doesn’t think the Mexican star will be able to stop Munguia.
“He doesn’t have a very good chin,” Mbilli said of Munguia. “He doesn’t like pressure and I don’t think he can take a punch that well. I think Canelo can knock him out if he wants to, but I think Canelo is having some trouble to stop any boxer. Look at his last three fights, he had a lot of trouble.”
Mbilli (26-0, 22 KOs) is set to take on England’s Mark Heffron in Shawinigan, Canada on May 25.
