Cruiserweight Contender Cheavon Clarke Secures British Title with Dominant Victory over Ellis Zorro
In a highly anticipated cruiserweight showdown, Cheavon Clarke emerged victorious, capturing the coveted British cruiserweight title with an impressive eighth-round stoppage of Ellis Zorro at a thrilling Kingpyn Boxing event.
The 33-year-old Kent native, boasting an unblemished 9-0 (7 KOs) professional record, has faced a frustrating period of inactivity as the title picture remained uncertain. However, by securing the prestigious Lonsdale belt, Clarke has now positioned himself firmly in the mix for some highly anticipated domestic clashes.
“The bout was a competitive affair, with Zorro, 17-2 (7 KOs), employing his jab and footwork in the opening rounds to create distance and negate Clarke’s ferocious in-fighting.”
The Londoner, tipping the scales at 199 1/4 lbs, showcased his trademark explosive bursts, but the 198 1/2 lbs Zorro remained composed, landing solid right hands and crunching uppercuts.
Determined to seize control, the 2020 Olympian Clarke came out aggressively in the third round, drawing Zorro forward and countering his effective jab. As the fight progressed, the BBC Boxing-featured clash became increasingly captivating, with both men trading blows in a thrilling display of skill and determination.
In the eighth round, with Zorro warned for excessive holding, Clarke seized the opportunity and landed a fight-ending right hand, securing the victory at the 2:59 mark. This decisive triumph not only earns Clarke the British cruiserweight title but also catapults him into the mix for some potentially lucrative domestic showdowns in the future.
