Refreshed Conwell Cruises to Sixth-Round Stoppage in Comeback Fight
Nearly 17 months out of the ring was no deterrent for unbeaten 26-year-old boxer Charles Conwell, who cruised to a sixth-round stoppage of Nathaniel Gallimore on the undercard of the Ryan Garcia-Devin Haney event this past Saturday.
Conwell, the junior middleweight from Cleveland, Ohio, expressed his delight at being “back in my element” after the dominant performance, which he attributed to promotional and managerial issues that had delayed his return. “If you don’t use it, you lose it,” Conwell told BoxingScene. “It felt so good to be back in there. It felt natural.”
The 19-0 fighter, with 14 knockouts to his name, was sublime against the veteran Gallimore (22-8-1), landing effective blows, including accurate uppercuts, almost at will. A barrage of punches on the fading 35-year-old Gallimore eventually convinced referee Arthur Mercante Jr. to call a halt to the contest.
“Me showing everyone I belong, that I’m a force to be reckoned with,” was the most satisfying aspect of the victory for Conwell, who believes he is not far from a shot at a world title. The junior middleweight division has crowned new champions in recent months, with Sebastian Fundora, Israel Madrimov, and Bakhram Murtazaliev all securing title belts.
Conwell, ranked number 3 by the WBC, is eager to maintain his activity levels, stating, “I like how Golden Boy will keep me active. That’s the type of activity I want and need. Activity sharpens skill and comfort in the ring.”
