Boxing Blockbuster: Catterall and Prograis Set to Clash on August 24th
On June 22nd, British boxer Jack Catterall and American two-time world champion Regis Prograis formally announced their much-anticipated junior welterweight showdown scheduled for August 24th at Manchester’s Co-op Live Arena.
Both fighters acknowledged that this bout is the biggest non-title fight that can be made in the 140-pound division. “Bar the world titles, this is the biggest fight in the division,” said Catterall, while Prograis, hailing from New Orleans, added: “I feel like me and Jack is the biggest fight you can make in the division without a belt.”
The two fighters were originally supposed to meet a few years ago, but the matchup never materialized. Now, they are set to collide in what promises to be an electrifying clash between the 29-1 (13 KOs) Catterall and the 29-2 (24 KOs) two-time champion Prograis.
Catterall’s Momentum and Prograis’ World Title Aspirations
Catterall, fresh off his rematch victory over Scotland’s Josh Taylor in May, is eager to maintain his career momentum. “That chapter with Josh now is closed,” he stated. “It’s a new chapter. Before the fight, I found myself in a great position, No. 1 in the WBO, but I was sitting on the shelf for too long. The division’s wide open now, but I didn’t want to be waiting until next year to get back in the ring and maybe landing a world title fight.”
Prograis, on the other hand, is determined to regain his world title aspirations. “The 140lbs division is stacked,” he added. “I’m coming back and coming back strong. I’m ready to do it again in front of the crazy U.K. fans.”
Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn revealed that the winner of this bout could be in line to challenge IBF champion Liam Paro in Australia in November or even become the mandatory challenger for Teofimo Lopez’s WBO title.
