Seasoned Middleweight Carlos Adames Unfazed by Lengthy Layoff Ahead of Clash with Terrell Gausha
Las Vegas, June 2023 – Middleweight contender Carlos Adames isn’t letting a lengthy layoff dampen his enthusiasm as he prepares to face off against Terrell Gausha on the undercard of the highly anticipated Gervonta “Tank” Davis vs. Frank Martin pay-per-view event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on June 15th.
The 30-year-old Adames (23-1, 18 KOs), who recently captured the vacant WBC middleweight title after the stripping of former champion Jermall Charlo, believes he is the best fighter in the 160-pound division and has no concerns about potential ring rust despite nearly a year of inactivity. “It’s been a while since I’ve been in the ring,” he stated, “but I’ve been in the gym for a long time getting into the best shape possible, mentally and physically.“
Adames’ ultimate goal is to unify the middleweight championship, a division that has historically featured some of boxing’s most captivating rivalries, such as the 2017 and 2018 clashes between Gennady Golovkin and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. However, in the years since, the middleweight landscape has become somewhat fragmented as Canelo has moved up in weight and several contenders have tried in vain to secure a lucrative showdown with the Mexican superstar.
Gausha (24-3-1, 12 KOs), a former junior welterweight who has now transitioned to the middleweight division, presents a formidable challenge for Adames. Despite the blemishes on his record, Gausha has proven to be a tough out, falling only to the likes of Tim Tszyu, Erickson Lubin, and Erislandy Lara, while managing to win several rounds in each of those defeats.
“I’m not concerned about Gausha’s resume or who he’s fought,” Adames asserted, “because I’m the best fighter he’s gonna face. I’m the best fighter in the 160-pound division, so he better be ready for what he’s coming up against. I’m not underestimating anyone, but I’m not worried about his experience.“
