Canelo Dominates Charlo in Unanimous Decision Victory
LAS VEGAS — In a highly anticipated super middleweight showdown, boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez solidified his reign atop the division with a decisive unanimous decision win over Jermell Charlo on Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena.
Alvarez (60-2-2), the undisputed WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO champion, was relentless in his attack, loading up on powerful body shots and hooks throughout the bout. The 33-year-old Mexican star knocked Charlo down in the seventh round with a devastating overhead right and body shot, the second time the junior middleweight titleholder had been dropped in his career.
“We worked on attacking the body for three months. For three months in the mountains without my family, without everything,” Alvarez said. “Boxing is my life. Boxing made me the person I am today. That’s why I love boxing so much.”
Despite Charlo’s (35-2-1) superior hand speed, he struggled to capitalize on the advantage as Alvarez constantly pressed forward, never letting up the pressure. The two-weight jump proved too much for the daring Charlo, who said he could “feel the difference in the weight” after moving up from 154 to 168 pounds.
Alvarez’s dominance was reflected on the scorecards, as he won convincingly with scores of 119-108, 118-109, and 118-109. The victory extended Alvarez’s unbeaten streak and further cemented his status as one of the sport’s elite pound-for-pound talents.
With the win, Alvarez said his next fight will take place on Cinco de Mayo, though he expressed indifference when asked about a potential showdown with Terence Crawford, who had criticized Charlo’s performance on social media.
