Canelo Alvarez Maintains Reign as Boxing’s Preeminent Force
Las Vegas – The crown on Canelo Alvarez’s head remains as secure as ever. The 33-year-old living legend solidified his status as the best fighter in the world with a dominant unanimous decision victory (115-113, 117-110, 116-111) over Jaime Munguía to defend his undisputed super middleweight title and cement his legacy as the greatest Mexican boxer of all time.
In what was billed as a potential passing of the torch, the 27-year-old Munguía failed to use his explosive power to dethrone the boxing superstar. Alvarez’s heightened ring IQ and crisp counterpunching made him an even more formidable foe than ever before.
“I take my time, that’s why I have a lot of experience. I take my time, I have 12 rounds to win a fight and I did,” Alvarez said after the fight.
The decisive moment came in the fourth round when Alvarez caught Munguía with a blinding left hook-right uppercut combination that put the challenger on the canvas for the first knockdown of his career. From there, Alvarez stunted Munguía’s momentum with a barrage of crushing countershots, showcasing his mastery of the sweet science.
Despite Munguía’s relentless aggression and refusal to back down, Alvarez’s poise and precision proved to be the difference. The victory marked Alvarez’s fourth defense of the super middleweight title, improving his career record to 61-2-2 and solidifying his status as the undisputed champion.
The bout’s buildup was overshadowed by the simmering rivalry between Alvarez and his former promoter, Oscar De La Hoya. The two exchanged heated words at a news conference, with De La Hoya claiming that Golden Boy Promotions built Alvarez, only to be met with a fiery retort from the champion. However, come fight night, the war of words was replaced by the exchange of blows, and Alvarez proved why his name remains the biggest draw in the sport.
