Canelo Alvarez Prepares to Defend His Titles Against Jermell Charlo
Las Vegas – Canelo Alvarez, the boxing superstar with a record of 59-2-2, is set to defend his WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO super middleweight world titles against junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo on Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena. Despite his impressive accomplishments, Alvarez is not satisfied and is determined to further cement his legacy.
In a Zoom interview with The Athletic, the 33-year-old Mexican superstar expressed his desire to prove his critics wrong. > “I have always had people who don’t believe in my skills, no matter what I do,” Alvarez said. “But you know, I don’t care. I go to work and do my job and that’s it. My last two fights, I was still in rehab for my hand. I wasn’t able to train 100 percent, I wasn’t able to have that same confidence in the ring. But right now I feel great and you will see the difference.”
Alvarez, who is ranked 5th on Forbes‘ list of highest-paid athletes, earning $110 million between May 2022 and May 2023, has the opportunity to reclaim his spot as the face of boxing from Terrence Crawford with a decisive victory over Charlo on Saturday.
“I have nothing to prove to people,” Alvarez said. “I have proved a lot. I have achieved a lot in boxing. If people don’t believe by now, they are never going to believe. I will just keep doing my job and when my career is over, people will see who I am.”
Charlo, the undisputed 154-pound champion, is looking to become the fourth fighter to become a champion after jumping two weight classes, joining the likes of Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Roy Jones Jr. and Alvarez himself.
Alvarez’s trainer and manager, Eddy Reynoso, emphasized the importance of this fight for the Mexican star. > “We spent three months training for this fight and had no setbacks whatsoever,” Reynoso said. “It’s been a while since Canelo has been able to train so intensely. We’ve left behind the injuries and setbacks and we’re ready to show that Canelo is prepared to put on a great fight for the fans.”
Despite his extensive experience, Alvarez remains passionate about his craft, stating, > “I love what I do and this kind of fight motivates me. It’s a big fight and that’s what I love. I get excited as soon as we announce the fight, and everyone is talking about it in the gym. And then the vibe really hits you during fight week.”
As Alvarez looks to the future, he has set his sights on four more years in the sport, with the goal of continuing to seek out the best challenges and showcasing his superiority as the best fighter in the world.
