Canadian Boxer Mckenzie Wright Misses Out on Paris Olympics Spot
Narrow Defeat at Last-Chance Qualifier
Canadian boxer Mckenzie Wright narrowly missed out on a spot at the upcoming Paris Olympics, falling 5-0 to Mexico’s Fatima in the women’s 50-kilogram quarterfinals at a last-chance qualifier on Sunday.
The 34-year-old from Oakville, Ontario, would have joined compatriots Tammara Thibeault (75 kg) and welterweight Wyatt Sanford (63.5 kg) in Paris, had she secured the victory. Thibeault and Sanford had already booked their tickets by winning gold at last year’s Pan American Games, and were part of Canada’s 2021 Tokyo Olympics team.
“The Paris boxing competition will feature 13 weight classes, with seven for men and six for women.”
Defeats for Other Canadian Boxers
Earlier in the tournament, Scarlett Delgado, Terris Smith, Sara Kali, Junior Petanqui, Keven Beausejour, and Doni Foreman all suffered defeats, while Marie Alahmadieh missed her first bout due to health issues, and Victor Tremblay failed to make weight.
Wright had earned a 5-0 decision over Serbia’s Nina Radovanovic on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals, but her run ultimately fell short against the Mexican boxer. The practical nursing graduate from Niagara College had won her third national title earlier this year, after a four-year hiatus from the sport.
Final Olympic Berths Secured
This Bangkok qualifier determines the final 51 Olympic quota places (23 for women, 28 for men) for the Paris Games. With no title bouts, the action in each weight class will conclude once the final Olympic berths are secured.
